Stress and Cognition
Summary: Sustained stress degrades frontal cortex function and hands cognitive control back to the amygdala — producing impulsive, habitual, selfish, and risk-blind behavior. This is physiology, not character.

The stress response
The amygdala detects threat, activates the sympathetic nervous system, and releases glucocorticoids (cortisol). This is adaptive for acute physical threat. It becomes pathological when activated repeatedly or chronically for psychological reasons — anxiety, anticipation, status threat — because the stress response did not evolve for these (source: Sapolsky-Behave.md).

What stress does to thinking
Sustained stress produces a predictable cluster of cognitive failures:
- Impaired risk assessment — we cannot accurately weigh probabilities
- Perseveration — running on habit and automatic behavior; difficulty switching
- Working memory disruption — less capacity for deliberate reasoning
- Fear conditioning potentiated — harder to extinguish conditioned fear
- Selfish shift — stress biases toward self-interest over cooperation
- Reduced empathy — both in mice and humans

Stress and the frontal cortex
Chronic stress actually structurally degrades the frontal cortex: dendritic spines in frontal-hippocampal connections decrease; hippocampal volume shrinks with prolonged depression. The amygdala, meanwhile, enlarges and becomes hyperreactive. The biological effect of adversity is to shift the brain toward automatic, emotional processing.
Connection to Kahneman
This is the biological explanation for why System 2 fails under pressure. When Kahneman describes decision fatigue and the depletion of effortful override, the mechanism is stress physiology: cortisol suppresses frontal cortex function, leaving System 1 in charge.
Female stress response
Sapolsky notes a documented sex difference: under stress, female responses tend toward “tend and befriend” — caring for offspring and seeking social affiliation — rather than fight-or-flight. This is mediated by oxytocin and estrogen interacting with the stress system differently.
