The stress response is exquisitely designed for acute physical threats: it mobilizes energy, suppresses non-urgent systems (digestion, reproduction, immune function), sharpens attention, and prepares the body for fight or flight. The zebra uses it for three minutes while being chased; then it’s over. Humans use it chronically — for jobs, relationships, status anxiety, and anticipated future threats.
