Mind and cognition

dual-process-cognition The mind operates on two systems — fast, automatic, emotional (System 1) and slow, deliberate, effortful (System 2). Sapolsky grounds Kahneman’s behavioral framework in neurobiology: the amygdala is System 1, the frontal cortex is System 2. System 2 is depletable; stress, hunger, and fatigue hand control back to System 1. Beliefs precede their justifications — conviction is System 1, argument reaches only the rationalisation layer on top of it.

stress-and-cognition Sustained stress degrades frontal cortex function and hands cognitive control back to the amygdala — producing impulsive, habitual, selfish, and risk-blind behavior. This is physiology, not character. The mechanism explains why chronic poverty, trauma, and overwork reliably produce the behaviours that are then used to blame the people experiencing them.

dopamine-and-anticipation Dopamine is not about pleasure — it is about the anticipation of reward. The biggest dopamine signal comes not when reward arrives, but when reward becomes possible. Intermittent reinforcement (unpredictable reward) drives the strongest responses, which is why gambling, social media feeds, and slot machines are structurally identical from the brain’s point of view.

narrative-bias The mind is a story-making machine. We construct maximally coherent narratives from whatever information is available (WYSIATI: What You See Is All There Is), then mistake the story for reality. Causation, history, and personal identity are all downstream of this tendency. The bias is not a flaw to be corrected but the default operating mode of System 1.


Biology and behavior

genes-are-not-destiny Genes specify context-dependent tendencies, not outcomes. The correct question is never “what does this gene do?” but “what does this gene do in this environment with this network of other genes?” The effect of any single gene on behavior is typically tiny, and the same gene can produce opposite effects in different environments.

childhood-adversity-and-the-brain Early adversity — poverty, abuse, neglect, or chronic stress — physically reshapes the developing brain: thinning the frontal cortex, enlarging and sensitising the amygdala, and stacking the odds against impulse control, emotional regulation, and life success. This is not metaphor; it is anatomy. The brain is most plastic during development, which means early environment has disproportionate and lasting structural effects.

oxytocin Widely known as the “love hormone,” oxytocin’s actual effect is parochial: it increases prosociality toward in-group members and worsens responses toward out-groups. It is a hormone of Us/Them distinction, not of universal warmth. The finding is a microcosm of a wider pattern — the same mechanism that produces cooperation within a group produces suspicion or hostility across its boundary.

free-will-and-moral-responsibility If behavior is fully determined by biology, culture, childhood, genes, and luck — all operating before the moment of “choice” — what remains of moral responsibility? Sapolsky argues nothing; Dennett defends compatibilism (free will and determinism can coexist if we define freedom as acting on internal representations). The disagreement matters practically: Sapolsky’s position calls for systematic revision of retributive punishment; Dennett’s leaves more of ordinary moral discourse intact.


Society and culture

in-group-out-group The Us/Them distinction is one of the most powerful organizers of human behavior — wired in hormonally (oxytocin), enforced socially (gossip, norm violation, honour cultures), and shaped by ecology. It forms in milliseconds, tracks almost any dimension of difference, and is deeply resistant to rational override. Even prosocial instincts amplify it: the same mechanism that bonds a group excludes outsiders.

collectivist-vs-individualist The deep split between East Asian collectivism and Western individualism is ecologically rooted — rice farming (labor-intensive, cooperative, interdependent) versus wheat farming (less so) — and is reflected in brain activation patterns, parenting styles, moral reasoning, and language. Culture is not just a set of beliefs; it reshapes cognition. The split persists in regional data within countries, not just between them.

cooperation-game-theory How does cooperation emerge among self-interested agents? The same logic recurs at every scale: Tit for Tat in iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma, gossip and reputation among hunter-gatherers, moralising gods who watch and punish defectors. Cooperation is not natural harmony — it is an equilibrium that requires mechanisms to punish free-riding and reward reciprocity.

violence-and-the-long-peace Has human violence declined over history? Pinker argues yes — per-capita rates have fallen dramatically, and the post-1945 period is historically unprecedented in the absence of great-power war. Archaeologists contest the prehistoric baseline; Sapolsky notes that nomadic hunter-gatherers (who can simply move away from conflict) are outliers. State formation reduces interpersonal violence but concentrates and scales it when states choose to use it.

political-manipulation A deliberate strategy for controlling populations: manufacture chronic dissatisfaction, let anger accumulate, then redirect it at chosen targets on demand. Herbert identifies the technique from inside power; Gurri explains why structural reform is systematically resisted by those who benefit from the dissatisfaction. Gibson’s klept is the end-state — a power structure that survived democratic collapse by always operating outside democratic accountability.

reconciliation-vs-defeat Military or political victory over an enemy postpones conflict rather than ending it; durable peace requires reconciliation — a change in the relationship, not just the balance of power. Defeat without reconciliation produces cycles of grievance that re-ignite. The implication is uncomfortable: ending conflicts durably requires engaging with the enemy’s narrative, not just their capacity.

happiness-vs-meaning Happiness (hedonic well-being: feeling good moment to moment) and meaning (eudaimonic well-being: purpose, contribution, coherent self-narrative) are related but distinct goods that often pull in opposite directions. Raising children, demanding creative work, and caring for others are meaningful and reduce momentary happiness. Kahneman’s experiencing self versus remembering self maps onto this: we choose and evaluate experiences based on how they will be remembered, not how they felt.


Language and learning

language-testing-and-identity Language tests are not neutral measurement instruments — they construct what they claim to measure, carry washback effects that reshape teaching and learning, and embed cultural assumptions about what “language ability” means. Tests define norms, and norms define who is considered proficient, educated, or employable. The political stakes of testing design are as high as the technical ones.


Epistemology and complexity

systems-thinking A mode of analysis focused on how parts interrelate and how structure generates behavior over time, rather than on linear cause and effect. Key concepts: elements, interconnections, and purpose (what the system does, not what it says it does); reinforcing and balancing feedback loops; delays that cause oscillation and overshoot; bounded rationality (actors optimise locally, producing irrational collective outcomes). Changing the purpose of a system changes it more than changing any element.

chaos-and-prediction In chaotic systems, more simulations do not reduce uncertainty — each run produces a meaningful result, but taken together they add up to no discernible pattern, because outcomes are exquisitely sensitive to initial conditions. Named the Chaos Problem by Banks (The Hydrogen Sonata). Cuts against the assumption that rational planning under uncertainty is anchored by expected value: if the outcome distribution has no learnable structure, the anchor doesn’t hold.

outside-context-problem A system-level encounter with something so foreign to existing frameworks that normal adaptive responses are inadequate — the framework breaks, not just the problem-solving within it. Coined by Banks in Excession. Generalises beyond fiction to any paradigm crisis: the 2008 financial crisis for risk models calibrated on non-crisis data, pandemic emergence for public health systems calibrated on seasonal illness. The characteristic failure mode is confident wrong answers until collapse.
