Oxytocin
Summary: Oxytocin is widely known as the “love hormone” or “trust hormone.” The actual finding is more disturbing: oxytocin makes us more prosocial toward our in-group and worse toward everyone else. It is a parochial hormone, not a universal one.

The received view
Oxytocin (and vasopressin, its close relative) received enormous popular attention as a prosocial molecule: it facilitates mother-infant bonding, monogamous pair-bonding, trust, empathy, generosity, and cooperation. Studies showed that nasal oxytocin administration increased trust in economic games.

The prosocial effects of oxytocin are within-group only. In studies where in-group and out-group targets were distinguished, oxytocin boosted cooperation with in-group members while increasing hostility, deception, or indifference toward out-group members.
Mechanism
Oxytocin and vasopressin are neuropeptides produced in the hypothalamus and released both peripherally and into the brain. Their effects are highly context-dependent:
- They most consistently increase prosociality in individuals who are already prosocially inclined; they have little effect on less prosocial individuals
- Sometimes they increase sociality (attention to social information) without necessarily increasing prosociality (acting helpfully with that information)
Genetic variation
Individuals with variants producing higher oxytocin or vasopressin receptor activity tend toward more stable monogamous relationships, more engaged parenting, better perspective-taking, more empathy, and stronger face-recognition responses. These are consistent effects of moderate magnitude.
Implications
Oxytocin may be one biological mechanism behind the “rally around the flag” effect — external threat tightens in-group bonds while increasing out-group hostility. “Us” becomes warmer; “Them” becomes more threatening. This has direct implications for in-group-out-group dynamics.
