A musical species

“The Musical Brain: Music is more fundamental to the human spirit than language.” “We are a musical species no less than a linguistic one.” “Rhythm is the most powerful medicine for a broken nervous system.”

Sacks’s opening claim challenges the standard hierarchy: language is usually treated as the distinctively human cognitive capacity, with music as a cultural add-on. The neurological evidence suggests otherwise. Music processing is distributed across more of the brain than language processing; it emerges earlier in development; it survives damage that destroys language; it is found in every known human culture. Rhythm especially has direct therapeutic power — it can synchronize movement in Parkinson’s patients and produce emotion in the completely aphasic. Music reaching what disease cannot silence

Sacks’s cases are clinically astonishing: patients with severe Alzheimer’s who cannot recognize their children can still sing all the words of songs from their youth; patients with Parkinson’s who cannot walk can dance. The therapeutic application (neurological music therapy, rhythmic auditory stimulation) is now established. Musical hallucinations — most common in the elderly and the deaf — reveal that the auditory cortex can generate music spontaneously without external input, suggesting that musical experience is partly internally generated.

The earworm and the amusic

The earworm (involuntary musical imagery) is Sacks’s entry into the brain’s autonomous musical activity — a mild version of the musical hallucinations seen in clinical populations. Amusia (congenital inability to perceive music as music) is its mirror: some people hear music as noise, or simply as sequences of unrelated sounds, with no emotional or aesthetic response whatsoever. The contrast between the amusic and the neurotypical listener reveals how much of the musical experience is constructed by a brain primed to hear structure and pattern. Synesthesia

“The Synesthete: For whom a C-sharp is not just a sound, but a shade of bright blue.”

Synesthesia — the involuntary cross-activation of sensory modalities — is most common in the auditory-visual domain. For synesthetes, notes, keys, or chords have specific, stable colors. This is not metaphor; the colors are perceived. Sacks uses synesthesia to illuminate the constructed nature of all sensory experience: “normal” hearing is also a construction, just a more consistently shared one.
