Reconciliation vs. Defeat
Summary: Military or political victory over an enemy postpones conflict rather than ending it; durable peace requires reconciliation — a change in the relationship, not just the balance of power.

The core claim
From Tiamat’s Wrath by James S. A. Corey (source: Clippings/Corey-Tiamats-Wrath.md):
“Wars never ended because one side was defeated. They ended because the enemies were reconciled. Anything else was just a postponement of the next round of violence.”
This is stated as a personal insight the character has reached over a lifetime — not a political philosophy she was taught, but something she has derived from experience. That framing matters: it is presented as empirical, not idealistic.
The selective pressure problem
Children of Strife by Adrian Tchaikovsky adds a structural reason why the lesson is so rarely acted on (source: Clippings/Tchaikovsky-Children-of-Strife.md):
“Somehow, over decades of societal tweaking by exactly those not-nice people, this had become a virtue. Work ethic, success as evidence of favour, all that stuff. Only now did she consider that bringing along some people who weren’t themselves ruthless sociopaths might have been an idea.”
Systems under competitive pressure select for ruthless actors — exactly the people least likely to choose reconciliation over total victory. The result is that the lesson about reconciliation is understood too late, by the wrong people, or never at all.
What this means for conflict
The two quotes together describe a trap:
- Conflicts are durable only when enemies are reconciled.
- The people who gain power during conflicts are selected for their unwillingness to reconcile.
- Therefore conflicts tend to cycle rather than resolve.
This connects to the cooperation-game-theory page: Tit for Tat establishes cooperation through reciprocity, but requires both parties to be capable of updating their strategy. Actors selected for ruthlessness may not be.
