Watts: Western science screens out spontaneity
Alan Watts argues that Western science succeeds by selecting for regularities and symmetries — imposing conceptual order on nature’s waywardness. But this order is maya (illusion). The “true suchness” of things is irreducibly spontaneous:
“Western science has made nature intelligible in terms of its symmetries and regularities, analyzing its most wayward forms into components of a regular and measurable shape… But this order is maya, and the ‘true suchness’ of things has nothing in common with the purely conceptual aridities of perfect squares, circles, or triangles.” (source: Notes/Uncertainty.md)
Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle is, on this reading, not a failure of measurement technique but a disclosure of something fundamental. The Western mind is “dismayed when ordered conceptions of the universe break down” precisely because it had treated its models as reality rather than as useful approximations.
See systems-thinking: every model is a simplification, and Meadows is equally clear that the map is not the territory. Watts extends this to say the territory itself resists being mapped. Pirsig makes the same argument via the “analytic knife” — rational dissection kills what it examines — and arrives at the same conclusion: caring engagement, not analysis, is how you stay in contact with what’s real. Le Guin: uncertainty as life’s enabling condition
Ursula K. Le Guin makes a stronger claim:
“The only thing that makes life possible is permanent, intolerable uncertainty: not knowing what comes next.” (source: Notes/Uncertainty.md)
This is not resignation — it is an ontological claim. A fully determined, fully predictable life would not be life. Uncertainty is the substrate in which choice, meaning, and narrative become possible. See chaos-and-prediction: not even vastly superior simulations eliminate this uncertainty, because initial conditions cannot be fully specified, and the system is exquisitely sensitive to them.
Feynman: intellectual comfort with not-knowing
Richard Feynman’s epistemic virtue is the practiced ability to tolerate — and enjoy — uncertainty:
“I think it’s much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. I have approximate answers and possible beliefs and different degrees of uncertainty about different things, but I am not absolutely sure of anything.” (source: Notes/Uncertainty.md)
This is not scepticism for its own sake. Feynman is not “not knowing” because he hasn’t tried — he is not knowing after trying, and is comfortable with what that produces: approximate answers, ranked by confidence, open to revision.
This is the epistemic stance Duke calls for in duke-thinking-in-bets: “I’m not sure” is often the most accurate answer, not a confession of failure. The outside-context-problem is, at one level, the encounter of a civilization’s certainties with something that renders them inapplicable — the dismay Watts describes writ large.
