Science and compassion are not opposites

Sapolsky’s opening provocation and recurring theme:

“You don’t have to choose between being scientific and being compassionate.”

The book’s entire project depends on this. Understanding that behavior is the product of biology does not make us robots. It means we can address causes rather than condemn symptoms. Compare sapolsky-determined, which pushes this argument to its logical conclusion: if biology determines behavior, retributive punishment cannot be justified.

The frontal cortex: sculpted by experience, not genes

“The brain is heavily influenced by genes. But from birth through young adulthood, the part of the human brain that most defines us (frontal cortex) is less a product of the genes with which you started life than of what life has thrown at you. Because it is the last to mature, by definition the frontal cortex is the brain region least constrained by genes and most sculpted by experience.”

The frontal cortex — seat of planning, impulse control, moral reasoning — is the last brain region to mature (not until mid-20s). This means it is maximally open to environmental shaping. Ironically, the genetic program evolved to free the frontal cortex from genes. See childhood-adversity-and-the-brain: early adversity physically reshapes this region, closing the developmental window faster and producing adults with reduced capacity for deliberation.

Adolescence: the frontal cortex on fire

“adolescence and early adulthood are the times when someone is most likely to kill, be killed, leave home forever, invent an art form, help overthrow a dictator, ethnically cleanse a village, devote themselves to the needy, become addicted, marry outside their group, transform physics, have hideous fashion taste, break their neck recreationally, commit their life to God, mug an old lady, or be convinced that all of history has converged to make this moment the most consequential.”

Limbic and emotional systems reach adult levels during adolescence; the frontal cortex has not. Full-blast emotion plus incomplete braking system equals the full range of human potential — heroic and catastrophic — concentrated in a few years.

Testosterone: facilitatory, not creative

“Testosterone has far less to do with aggression than most assume. Within the normal range, individual differences in testosterone levels don’t predict who will be aggressive… When testosterone does play a role, it’s facilitatory — testosterone does not ‘invent’ aggression. It makes us more sensitive to triggers of aggression… the rise in testosterone during a status challenge does not necessarily increase aggression; it increases whatever is needed to maintain status. In a world in which status is awarded for the best of our behaviors, testosterone would be the most prosocial hormone in existence.”

The popular testosterone-as-aggression narrative is wrong. Testosterone amplifies status-seeking behavior, whatever form that takes in a given context. The same hormone that fuels violence in a street gang context might fuel generosity in a context where generosity confers status.

Class, wealth, and empathy

“when it comes to empathy and compassion, rich people tend to suck… wealthier people are less adept at recognizing other people’s emotions and in experimental settings are greedier and more likely to cheat or steal.”

And the causation runs both ways — priming people to feel wealthy (by asking them to compare themselves with those worse off) immediately reduces their empathy and increases their likelihood of taking candy from children. Wealth doesn’t just select for existing traits; it produces them.

Heritability is context-dependent
