The central paradox

“We control nothing, but influence everything.” “each individual controls almost nothing, but influences almost everything.”

The two halves of the thesis: control is an illusion in complex systems; influence, however, is real and pervasive. We are not agents who steer the world, but we are nodes in a network where small perturbations propagate.

Complex systems are chaotic

“We now know that many systems are chaotic — so sensitive to the minutiae of their initial conditions that, even though they follow a clockwork logic, they’re impossible to predict.” “Modern society is a complex system, seemingly stable, teetering on the edge of chaos — until everything falls apart due to a small change, from the accidental to the infinitesimal.”

Social science’s dirty secret

“even our best minds don’t really understand how our social world works.”

Klaas argues that the social world’s predictive failures are structural, not fixable by better methods: the observer affects the observed; the past is not always a reliable guide when system parameters change; missing variables always exist.

The invisible pivots

“what we ignore are the invisible pivots, the moments that we will never realize were consequential, the near misses and near hits that are unknown to us because we have never seen, and will never see, our alternative possible lives.”

We identify turning points retrospectively, constructing narrative after the fact. But invisible turning points also shaped us — and are by definition unknowable. Compare narrative-bias: the mind prefers a clean story of causes; the world generates messy contingency.

Free will in a complex world

“If our thoughts come from our neurons, and we can’t actively control our neurons with some magical material we call our minds, then the way we think and the actions our thoughts produce are not so different from thoughts and actions swayed by a tumor.”

Klaas reaches similar conclusions to sapolsky-determined from a different direction (complexity rather than biology): libertarian free will is likely a delusion.

Efficiency vs. resilience

“We should learn our lesson, build more slack into our systems, and trade perfect efficiency for better resilience.”

Cooperation as the answer

“if we want to maximize the chance that our actions will matter even more, then the best pathway comes from one of the finest innovations our species has ever evolved: cooperation.”

If individual control is illusory, collective influence is real. Compare cooperation-game-theory: iterated games and mutual reputation-building are how cooperation emerges in an unpredictable world.
