Diamond’s central answer to “Why did Europeans conquer the Americas, Africa, and Australia, rather than the other way around?” is not racial intelligence or cultural superiority but geography: Eurasia had the right suite of domesticable plants and animals, the right axis (east-west, allowing crops to spread across similar latitudes), and the right population density to generate specialists, states, and germs. The real engines of empire

Surplus food enables specialization: soldiers, craftspeople, bureaucrats, priests. Specialization enables states. States enable military organization. Crops spread most easily across similar latitudes (similar day length, temperature, rainfall). This single geographic fact had enormous consequences for the rate of agricultural intensification.
